High Post Screen
Description

This is a simple play that can work at any level but is especially easy to teach younger players. The basic concept is to get a solid screen from the high post after the point guard makes a pass to the wing. If executed well, it can result in a layup and at the very least it can force a switch putting a guard defender on your post player.

  • To begin this play have your wing players, #2 and #3, v-cut in to create a lane for the initial pass.
  • Player #1 can pass to either wing.
  • After passing, #1 cuts towards the opposite wing and a little deeper than the foul-line; this sets their defender up for the upcoming screen.
  • As the pass is made to the wing, the post player on that side (#5) flashes to the high-post, jump-stops, and sets a solid screen for player #1.
  • Player #1 after driving their defender below the screen, cuts sharply to receive the pass from the wing player (#2).
  • Player #2, who may need to create a passing lane, delivers a bounce-pass to #1 as the screen is cleared.
  • Player #1 should have a clear lane to the basket as #4 draws their defender away by cutting to the corner.
  • Player #5 should roll to the basket a full count after #1 clears the screen and look for the return pass from #1 if necessary.
  • Player #2 should rotate to the top of the key and be ready to defend the fast break if the shot is missed.
Key Points
  • Stress that your players need to work to create the passing lanes necessary to execute this play.
  • Player #1 must drive their defender deep enough to set up the high-post screen.
  • When the post player rolls after setting the screen they should not be too close to #1.
  • Player #1 initially looks to drive off of the screen but may have a better option to shoot a short-jumper too.
  • If both defenders go to #1 off of the screen, the screener should be open for the classic "pick and roll"
