Description

A simple zone-attacking play that will create an open shot and maybe a score if you have a good wing shooter or two! This play is simple enough to teach at any level.

Play Setup
  • Player 1, the point-guard, brings the ball up the center of the court.
  • Players 4 and 5, your post players, start on opposite sides in each respective short corner.
  • Players 2 and 3 start near the three-point line at a depth of the foul-line extended.

  • Player 1 brings the ball over half-court down the center.
  • Player 1 cuts toward and passes to player 3 at the right wing.
  • This play can just as easily go to the other side to player 2 if that pass is open.
  • As player 3 receives the pass, the zone should react and shift over to the ball-side. This gives players 2 and 4 the opportunity to crash down and screen the two outside defenders on the back side of the zone.
  • After player 1 passes to the wing, he cuts to the opposite wing that should be open due to the shift of the zone.
  • Player 3 ball-fakes hard to player 5 in the right corner and makes a skip pass over the defense to player 1.
  • Player 1 catches and shoots the perimeter shot if it is open.
  • If player 1 does not shoot, the ball can be passed to player 4 in the short corner or can be rotated through the top of the key by player 2 who is flashing there after setting the screen.
Key Coaching Points
  • Player 1 needs to cut to the open area and make sure she becomes squared to the basket and ready to shoot as she awaits the skip pass.
  • In any zone-attacking offense, ball movement is crucial. Get your players in the habit of making crisp and accurate passes. The ball must move faster than the defensive zone can react.
