Screen and Seal
Description

This play works best against a 2-3 zone defense and requires some muscle from your center to set a screen and then get inside position against the opponent's center for the inbounds pass and resulting shot.

Setup
  • Player 3 is the inbounder.
  • Player 5 sets up in front of the inbounder at a depth of about halfway up the lane.
  • Players 2 and 4 stack on the opposite side of the lane at the low block.
  • Player 1 sets up on the same side as the inbounds out on the perimeter near the three-point arc.

  • Player 3 slaps the ball and yells "Go!" to start the play.
  • Player 5 flashes to set a screen on the zone's middle, low defender (usually the other team's center).
  • Player 4 cuts across the lane, using player 5's screen and attempting to attract the defenses's attention by appearing to look for the inbound pass.
  • To attract attention, they can yell "Ball! Ball! Ball!"
  • Player 5, after setting the screen and waiting for player 4 to clear, reverse-pivots, and seals their defender to the inside.
  • By sealing their defender, this should create a passing lane for the inbounds.
Key Coaching Points
  • A bounce pass will be easier for player 5 to handle since they should be at very close range to the inbounder.
  • Player 2 can cut to the opposite short corner and be another inbound option if the defense fails to take away the pass to that area.
  • Player 1 is an almost guaranteed safety valve since he should be behind the defense and open for an over-the-top inbounds lob pass.
