Box With Three Options
Description

A good inbound play to run against a man-to-man defense. It has three scorng options and an "all else fails" safety valve option as well.

Play Setup
  • Player 3 is the inbounder.
  • Player 5 sets up on the low block on the inbound side while player 4 sets up on the opposite side of the lane about halfway between the low block and the foul-line.
  • Player 1 sets up at the elbow on the inbound side while player 2 does the same on the other elbow.

  • The play starts as player 3 slaps the ball.
  • Immediately, player 5 cuts across the lane and sets a screen for player 4. Player 3, the inbounder then has three options:
  • OPTION #1
  • If player 4 is open, the ball is inbounded to them for the close-range shot from the block.
  • OPTION #2
  • If player 4 is not open, player 5, who has reverse-pivoted from the setting the screen and sealing their defender may be open on the opposite low block. This is the play’s
  • OPTION #3
  • The third option is player 1 who has rotated down to the short corner on the ball side. They should be open for the inbound pass and a quick short-range jumper.
  • The safety valve is player 2 who has rotated over and back near half-court for a lob pass over the defense.
Key Coaching Points
  • Player 4 must be patient and wait for player 5 to set the initial screen.
  • Player 5 must be very agressive in order to set the intial screen and then seal their defender and get position for a possible inbound pass.
  • Your inbounder (player 3) must be quick to recognize when an option is covered and know where the next option is. Practice is the only way to improve the execution of this play.
