Sometimes the hardest part of coaching youth basketball is trying to figure out
what to do in your practices. We know the feeling; your rushing home from work
for that 6:00 practice and you realize you have no idea what to do when you get
there. Many new coaches end up scrimmaging for an hour or
so because they don't know of any drills they can guide their team through.
Use Team Drills to Teach Basketball Fundamentals
Basketball practices at the youth level should be used to reinforce the basic
basketball fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and playing
defense. In this section we provide an ever-growing collection of basketball
team drills that focus on these fundamentals and you can use to build your practice plan. Some of these drills
are old school and you may even remember them from your youth while others are
exciting and creative ways to practice a fundamental you may never have thought of.
Basketball Team Drills Can Add Structure to Your Practices
Each drill is categorized by the fundamental that it focuses on. We recommend you
try a few of them out in your practices and see which ones your kids really
enjoy. After that, be consistent and use the drills often. You'll see that the
kids enjoy the structure that the drills add to your practice and once they
become familiar with the drills, they'll get set-up and going before you can
blow the whistle!
