Eleven Man Fast-Break Drill
Description

A great drill to keep the whole team moving and works on fast-break transition skills like outlet passing, filling the lane, and attacking the basket.

Setup
  • A minimum of 11 players are required. You'll also need a full court and one basketball.
  • There is an outlet line at each of the four outlet positions on the court; near the sideline on both sides, foul-line extended.
  • Each of these lines have at least one player. If you have more than 11 players, they can get in one of these lines.
  • Position two defenders on each end of the court in the key area near each respective elbow.
  • Three players start the drill on offense at half-court; the ball in the middle while the other two offensive players fill the outside lanes on either side.

  • The drill begins on the coach's whistle
  • The three players on offense attack the basket against the two defenders on that side.
  • This is a fast-break drill so the offense needs to pass and shoot quickly. It shouldn't take more than a few passes before a shot.
  • As a shot is made, whether it is made or missed, all five players go hard for the rebound.
  • The rebounder now immediately starts a fast break the other way by passing to the closest outlet player on that end of the court in the outlet line.
  • If there is no shot because of a turnover, the action is the same; the player with the ball immediately starts the fast-break the other way.
  • After the outlet pass is made, the outlet man should dribble to the center lane and the rebounder should fill to the outside lane.
  • The two players that were on offense and did not get the rebound, stay on that end of the court and become that basket's two defenders
  • The other two players left will go to that end's outlet lines.
  • The drill's pattern continues now as the 3-on-2 break goes to the other basket.
  • The rebound or turnover is immediately outletted and that player joins the outlet players on a break the other way
  • As before, the two former offensive players stay to play defense on that end and the two other players fill the outlet lines.
Key Points
  • This is a continuous drill that can be run as long as you'd like.
  • Encourage the offense to attack the basket and find the open player by making the defense commit.
  • Keep the pace fast! You want this run at game-like speed.
  • Do not allow lazy outlet passes. The outlet pass needs to be crisp and accurate.
  • You can run this drill with more than 11 players. They can start behind the first player in nay outlet line.
