Low-Post Drill
Description

This basketball offense drill teaches post players how to work for low-post position, receive an entry pass, and then how to read the defender and make the appropriate move to the basket for the score.

Setup
  • Players work in groups of three: one perimter player, one low-post player, and one low-post defender.
  • The ball starts with the perimeter player.

  • The perimeter player (#1) starts the drill dribbling along the perimeter from the wing to the corner, looking for an opportunity to make the entry pass to the low-post player (#2).
  • As the ball is dribbled on the perimter, the low-post player works to seal his defender to a side and establish low-post position for an entry pass.
  • The entry pass is made to the low-post player.
  • Upon receiving the entry pass, the post player reads defense and makes the appropriate move:
  • Drop-step baseline into power lay-up.
  • Drop-step middle into baby hook.
  • Turn and face, bank shot.
  • Turn and face, drive middle.
  • Turn and face, up and under (crossover into power lay-up).
  • Or the post player can pass back out to the perimter player and work to re-establish position if a good shot isn't available.
Key Points
  • For less-experienced players, start this drill with token defense. As footwork improves, go with full defense in low-post.
  • Teach the post player to learn how to read the defense and react accordingly.
  • Teach your post players to be decisive with their moves as too much dribbling in the low-post usually results in a turnover.
  • When drop-stepping to baseline, teach post players to get their body parallel to backboard for the power-lay-up.
  • Go up strong, protect ball with inside arm / elbow.
  • Use pump fakes.
