Speed Dribble
Description

The speed dribble is mostly used in fast-break situations when the ball-handler is in the open court and trying to get up the court as fast as possible. While it is not a complex dribbling variation, be sure to practice it only after the basic dribble skill has been mastered.

Proper Technique
  • Keep your head up.
  • The dribbler must be able to see the court as they dribble. If your head is down you may charge into a defender or you may not see an open teammate ahead of you!
  • Push! Push! Push!
  • Keep pushing the ball as far ahead of you as you can. You are basically making yourself run to catch up with your dribble.
  • Dribble high but in control.
  • The higher your dribble, the longer the ball stays in the air, thus allowing you to run to your destination with fewer dribbles. You are faster running than you are dribbling.
  • Stopping.
  • If your speed dribble ends in a lay-up, be sure to breakdown by lowering your dribble and shortening your steps as you approac the basket. Also remember to come in at and angle if possible as this makes it easier to use the backboard for the lay-up.
Tips
  • Practice this dribble the length of the court. Change hands each trip.
  • Push yourself to go as fast as you can and don't be afraid to lose the ball when you practice.
  • While your goal is to dribble the length of the court in as few dribbles as possible, don't let the ball het so high that your hand can't be on top for control.
